Mauritius Romance

Mauritius is a small island nation of three inhabited and several other islands located in the southwestern Indian Ocean. Facilities for tourism are well developed. In order of frequency, Creole, French, and English are spoken; English and French are common in the main towns and tourist areas but may not be understood in outlying villages. Officially discovered in 1505 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Mascarenhas, the island was occupied successively by the Dutch, the French and finally the British till March 12, 1968, when Mauritius became independent. There is no high or low season in Mauritius, with the exception of the Christmas to New Year period. During Mauritian 'winter,' from July to September, daytime temperatures become balmy. This is one of the most popular times to visit, as there is less rain and humidity. The worst time to visit weatherwise is from January to April, when the long days can be too hot and humid, and there is the threat of cyclones, causing visitors to spend time indoors to stay away from extra-heavy rains.

Why Mauritius

Mauritius offers something for everyone - there are enough beaches for the beach bums to loll about on, water sports for the adventurous at heart and snorkelling, scuba diving - you name it! Owing to its repeated conquests, the island is very cosmopolitan and home to people from Africa, India, Malaysia, Europe and China. This multi-cultural background has permeated into all aspects of life - be it food, dance and music or language - giving the island its unique charm. There are historical monuments, temples, churches and mosques to visit, markets to bargain one's way through, waterfronts and nature parks to amble through, and restaurants and bars to keep the best of the gourmands happy!
